Bikes for Special Needs

www.bikesatvienna.com
I have found a bike shop that has many options for folks with special needs.  There were actually four possibilities for us…..I’ve had trouble finding any options, so to have choices was just wonderful.  We were able to try out options at an “All Abilities Cycling Event” they had recently.
Attached are some pictures of what they came up with for us.  Mattie was very clear in his choice “I want the low bike with the beach chair seat.”  What we have is two recumbent trikes attached with a special coupler.  Mattie’s bike has a seat belt and adapted pedals (a simple toe cage with a bungee cord to hold his foot in place).  It is very stable and Mattie feels very safe.  The 21 gears make hills possible.  Mattie pedals too and it really helps. I have a mirror on Matthew and another for the road behind us.  This has been an awesome bike for us!  Mattie is finally able to enjoy the experience of a bike ride.
Cost was not outrageous.  I think most recumbent bikes are at least $2000.  These were approximately $1000 each plus about $300 for the coupler and other accessories.  This bike will grow with Mattie into adulthood.  We should be able to ride it until he’s an adult and I’m a little old lady.
If you know families interested in bikes, Bikes at Vienna is well worth checking out.
For more info, contact me.  I’d be glad to talk to any families who are interested in something like this. The website is also a good place to look.
